Free Swimming and Gym sessions for school pupils

East Dunbartonshire Council have awarded a further allocation of £300,000 to East Dunbartonshire Leisure and Culture Trust (EDLCT) to extend a programme of free gym and swim access to March 2024. This will continue to benefit the Council’s 17,291 primary and secondary pupils.

Free swimming will be available for the area's primary school children while secondary students aged 12 to 18 will be able to access a range of free gym sessions. Both swimming and gym sessions are available in any of the EDLC leisure centres.

Who does the free swim offer apply to?

  • All children who attend primary school in East Dunbartonshire.
  • Any home schooled child that is a resident of East Dunbartonshire.
  • Any pupil who attends a school in a neighbouring local authority who resides in East Dunbartonshire.
  • 11 year olds in S1 at any East Dunbartonshire secondary school. If the child turns 12 between November and March, they will then be able to access the free gym sessions instead.

How often can a pupil take advantage of the scheme?

Is there a time limit on the free swim?

  • Yes all pools will operate a maximum swim time of 90 minutes and this may be reduced during peak periods

Where does the offer apply?

Does this mean that swimming lessons are free to that age group?

  • No – swimming lessons are part of the Direct Debit scheme

I already have an unlimited swim membership with EDLC?

  • All unlimited swim members of primary school age will be contacted and will benefit from no subscription payments during the term of the initiative

What is the pool admission policy?

Who is the free gym use available to?

  • Pupils who attend secondary school in East Dunbartonshire aged 12 - 18 years.
  • Any home schooled young person that is a resident of East Dunbartonshire.
  • Any pupil who attends a school in a neighbouring local authority who resides in East Dunbartonshire.

Can you just turn up?

  • Yes but not until you have fully registered and took part in a gym induction. All registration must be done in person at one of the three leisure centres
  • If the secondary pupil is registering unaccompanied by a parent/guardian they must bring proof of age

I already have an All Inclusive membership with EDLC?

  • All Inclusive members of secondary school age will be contacted to confirm eligibility and will benefit from no subscription payments during the term of the initiative

Is there any restrictions on the usage?

  • No free weights for 12 and 13 years
  • 12-13 years unaccompanied access:
    • During the school Easter holidays 3 – 14 April - Mon- Thurs access for pupils is restricted to 12 noon to 17:30 only, while Friday is restricted to 12 noon to 21:00
    • Saturday 12:00 to 16:30
    • Sunday 12:00 to 17:00
    • Outwith these times, 12 and 13 year old gym users may attend with a responsible adult over 18
  • No restrictions for 14 and 15 year olds
  • Due to supervision requirements, the maximum number of participants under 18 years old will vary depending on the size of the gym

Where does the offer apply?

Can I sign up before the 1 November?

  • Yes – we would be delighted to register you before the 1 November and make arrangements for your induction before the free access commences. Registration is due to open on Thursday 27 October

I’m anxious as I’ve not used a gym before and not sure what to do?

  • Don’t be…. Our gyms are always staffed and the team are full of qualified ‘Rock Star’ fitness instructors who will ensure you are equipped with the knowledge and tools to get the best out of your visits
