Library FAQs
The library is a safe place to spend time. You can read books, newspapers, or e-magazines, or you can use the free WiFi on your own phone, tablet or laptop. We also have laptops you can use in the Library, although there are rules about what you are allowed to watch on them. If you are not sure what you can or cannot watch on library laptops then you can ask library staff. It’s free to use the laptops, but you have to pay to print or photocopy. Lots of reading groups meet in the library too, and if you want to set up your own group you can ask about using one of the Library’s rooms by emailing: libraries@eastdunbarton.gov.uk
All library members can borrow:
- Up to 20 books (including audiobooks and language courses)
- One console game (if you are under 16, bring your parent/carer to the library and they will be asked to complete a Games Lending Permission form on your behalf) There is a small hire charge for console games
- Your online library provides access to eBooks and eAudiobooks on BorrowBox and Libby, and newspapers and magazines on PressReader
- You can also use your library card to access online library services.
If you have any questions, you can email libraries@eastdunbarton.gov.uk or you can DM on social media through Facebook or Twitter @EDLC_Culture.
You can join by asking a member of Library staff when you visit, or by using the online membership form. Once you have applied online, you will need to collect your membership card from your chosen library.
You need to provide a form of proof of your name and address such as a utility bill or driving license.
People under 16 need to have their membership signed by a parent or guardian when collecting their card.
To stop anyone borrowing books on your account, we encourage library users to bring their card with them, or ask for a replacement if it gets lost. However, if you forget your card and you want to borrow books or use a computer, you can show library staff a piece of identification with your name on it, like a bank card.
We find the quietest times are in the evenings, roughly between 5-8pm. The noisiest periods are when there are sessions for babies and toddlers. Sometimes there are also school visits in the Library, which can also be noisy. If you’d like, you can call the Library before you visit on 0141 777 3021, to check if there’s anything happening that day.
Dedicated Quiet Times begin on 1 April 2026, where the lights will be lowered, phones will be turned down, staff will work on quieter tasks, turning down phones and ask users to speak softly. The library will also avoid scheduling any school bookings, workshops or activities.
- Monday: 10am-12noon
- Tuesday: 6pm-8pm
- Friday: 12noon-2pm
Don’t be worried about asking a member of Library staff for help if you’ve got any questions.
Members of staff will wear a ‘Cultural Assistant’ badge.
They can help you if you want some reading suggestions or if there is something that you don’t understand.
Some of our Libraries are classed as ‘Community Hubs’, and also share a building with East Dunbartonshire Council Customer Service staff which can be a bit confusing, but whoever you speak to should point you in the right direction for the Library.
Further help
