How it works
All courses are free and must be booked in advance. Please register your interest with your Active Schools Coordinator.
Places may be in high demand, so register your interest as soon as possible.
If you need to cancel, please let us know as soon as possible so your place can be offered to those on a waiting list.
What we need from you
Volunteers are asked to deliver a minimum of 4 hours of extracurricular activity in the sport/activity corresponding to the course attended.
This could be in your child’s school, a local primary school, a local additional support needs school, or in a community setting.
Active Schools will support volunteers to find the right setting and session to suit their diary and interests.
2025/26 Training Calendar
Date: 6th and 20th November 2025 4:00pm – 6:00pm
Venue: Hillhead Community Centre
Course description: This workshop is an updated version of Introduction to Multi Skills. It has been developed as part of sportscotland’s physical literacy coach CPD pathway and has been designed to support new coaches, volunteers, students, young leaders, parents and teachers who are working with children aged between 5-12.
Date: 12th November 2025 4:00pm – 6:00pm
Venue: Leisuredrome
Course description: This course will give candidates the skills to prepare, plan and support activity sessions in their local schools and community. The course is fun and practical and will involve a range of activities & drills that develop game and movement skills.
Date: January 2026, 4:00pm – 6:00pm (exact date TBC)
Venue: Torrance Primary School
Course description: The Mini Fit training has been designed to support anyone who is delivering physical activity for pupils in Primary 1–3 classes. It provides volunteers with a wide variety of games that younger children enjoy playing. The training includes helpful ideas of how to organise the games, as well as how to keep children safe whilst participating in activities.
Date: 9th March 2026, 4:00pm – 6:00pm
Venue: Bearsden Academy
Course description: Softball Cricket is a short form variation of the sport of Cricket, this course will focus on the basic rules for gameplay with games and coaching ideas to create fun and exciting sessions for primary school pupils.
Date: Tuesday 11th November 2025 / 4pm-6pm
Venue: Allander Leisure Centre
Course description: This 2-hour workshop aims to provide a basic introduction to Autism. We will discuss the common characteristics and sensory challenges for people with Autism and explore useful communication strategies to positively support a person with Autism.
Date: Thursday 20th November / 4:15pm - 6pm
Venue: Huntershill Sports Hub
Course description: This course will explore different dance themes, props, music and dance styles. Participants will gain knowledge and confidence in order to create dance sessions inclusive for all.
Date: Thursday 15th January / 4-6pm
Venue: Bearsden area (TBC)
Course description: This workshop includes a mixture of theory and practical delivery to enable volunteers to positively include people with a disability in physical activity and sport.
Date: April 2026 (exact date TBC) 4pm-6pm
Venue: Woodland View School
Course description: Makaton is a unique language programme that uses symbols, signs and speech to enable people to communicate. This session will give you a basic introduction to Makaton which will help you to support participants at your sports sessions.
