Volunteer Training Calendar for Secondary School Pupils

Our calendar of free courses for 2025/26 can be found below.
Our Young Leader Training aims to support the recruitment of Active Schools Young Leaders and provide them with the relevant skills and knowledge to increase the delivery of extracurricular activity.
The courses are fun and practical and will give pupils the skills to prepare, plan and support activity sessions in their school and local community. Active Schools will fully support young leaders throughout this process.
Cost: All Active Schools Young Leader courses are FREE of charge.
Expectations: Young Leaders are expected to deliver a minimum of 5 hours extracurricular activity in the sport / activity corresponding to each course attended. This could be in their own secondary school, local primary school, local additional support needs school or community setting. Active Schools will support young leaders to find the right setting to suit their needs and interests.
Course Booking: All courses must be booked in advance. Please register your interest with your Active Schools Coordinator or PE Teachers. Places may be in high demand, so register your interest NOW! If you are successful in selection a registration link will then be sent out to confirm your place on the course and gain parental/ carer consent.
Cancellation Of Places: Participants are asked to cancel places only in exceptional circumstances. Please contact the Active Schools team if you wish to cancel your place so it can be offered to those on a waiting list.

All young leaders must be S3+ & attend an East Dunbartonshire secondary school - No previous experience necessary.

How it works

2025/26 Training Calendar
Date - Thurs 27th Nov 2025 / 4 - 7pm
Venue - Leisuredrome, Bishopbriggs
Course description: This practical course will be delivered by a Badminton Scotland Tutor and focus on how to coach, how to organise festivals and how to officiate competitions. Young Leaders who complete this are then able to assist in the delivery of Big Hit Festivals and extracurricular clubs within their schools and associated primaries.
Date - Tuesday 25th Nov 2025 / 4pm - 5:30pm
Venue - Allander Leisure Centre
Course description: This is an exciting practical course using conditioned games to cover the main skills in basketball. Candidates will be taught how to develop physical movement skills, technical skills and build a basic tactical understanding. On completion candidates will gain the skills needed to assist in facilitating fun, inclusive and engaging basketball sessions for younger age groups.
Date - Tuesday 21st Oct 2025 / 4:30pm - 6:30pm /
Venue - Allander Leisure Centre
Course description: This workshop will look at basic principles of coaching football; space management, time management, adaptability and activity levels, This will be done through fun games, basic coaching practices and small-sided games.
Date - Wednesday 28th Jan 2026 / 4pm -6pm
Venue - Bishopbriggs Academy
Course description: This course will give pupils the skills to prepare, plan and support activity sessions in their school and local community. The course is fun and practical and will involve pupils participating in a range of skills/drills as well as focusing on leadership styles and what makes a good coach.
Date - Wednesday 29th Oct 2025 / 4-6pm
Venue - Kirkintilloch Leisure Centre
Course description: This practical course will provide Young Leaders with the basic skills required to prepare, plan and run fun netball sessions for primary aged pupils.
Once completed Young Leaders can lead and assist on sessions in local primary schools and the community with support from their Active Schools Coordinator.
Date - Wednesday 21th Jan 2026 / 4pm -6:30pm
Venue - St. Ninian’s High School
Course description: The Volleyball Ambassadors course will give pupils the confidence to assist with extra-curricular secondary school provision or deliver the basics of volleyball to primary school pupils. It is designed to provide an introduction to leading a volleyball session in a community and educational environment.
Inclusive Courses
These courses are open to Young Leaders S3- S6 (Disability Inclusion Training is for 16+) from an EDC school who have an interest in supporting ASN/ inclusive sessions. Please note these training courses are also open to adult volunteers and not solely part of our Young Leader Programme.
Date - Tuesday 11th November 2025 / 4pm-6pm
Venue - Allander Leisure Centre
Course description - This 2-hour workshop aims to provide a basic introduction to Autism. We will discuss the common characteristics and sensory challenges for people with Autism and explore useful communication strategies to positively support a person with Autism.
Date - Thursday 15th January 2026 / 4-6pm
Venue - Bearsden area
Course description - This workshop includes a mixture of theory and practical delivery to enable volunteers to positively include people with a disability in physical activity and sport.
Date - Thursday 20th November 2025 / 4:15pm - 6pm
Venue - Huntershill Sports Hub
Course description - This course will explore different dance themes, props, music and dance styles. Participants will gain knowledge and confidence in order to create dance sessions inclusive for all.
Date - April 2026 (Date TBC) 4pm-6pm
Venue - Woodland View School
Course description - Makaton is a unique language programme that uses symbols, signs and speech to enable people to communicate. This session will give you a basic introduction to Makaton which will help you to support participants at your sports sessions.
I thoroughly enjoyed the young leader programme, the training and support has been amazing!
